CHILD DEVELOPMENT
We believe that childhood is a time of wonder and growth.
At The Mulberry Bush, we recognise that each child’s development is unique. The early years are filled with significant milestones, from motor skills and language development to social and emotional growth. We provide a nurturing environment that supports every stage of child development, helping your little one reach their potential in a playful, engaging way.
COOKING
Children engage in cooking activities at least once a month. They are encouraged to self-serve at all mealtimes and assist in the preparation of weekly meals. From growing vegetables in our garden to making playdough, children learn valuable life skills and explore different cultures through diverse menus and activities.
GROSS MOTOR SKILLS (CLIMB)
Each age group has access to age-appropriate climbing equipment, both indoors and outdoors. Children are encouraged to take safe risks with practitioner support, helping them reach gross motor milestones through physical play and movements, including daily yoga sessions and extracurricular activities like sports and dance.
SELF-REGULATION
Daily yoga sessions teach children body movements, stretches, and calming strategies. Our nurturing approach supports their mental well-being, with safe spaces and practitioners trained as Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSAs). Golden rules encourage kindness, forgiveness, and empowerment.
EXPRESSION
Children express themselves through musical movements, art and design activities, role-play, and storytelling. Practitioners model healthy emotional expression, helping children confidently understand and articulate their feelings.
SELF-CARE
From child-led weaning to independent dressing, we guide children towards self-sufficiency with age-appropriate activities. Children learn to listen to their bodies’ signals, such as hunger or needing the toilet, and we work closely with parents for a smooth transition from nappies to pants.
CONNECT
Our “family trees” with photos help children feel connected to their families. We celebrate diverse cultures, explore nature, and engage with the community through visits and professional interactions. Practitioners share observations and plan activities around children’s interests, fostering a sense of belonging.
FINE MOTOR SKILLS
From three months, babies are supported in developing fine motor skills through age-appropriate tools, pouring and tipping activities, mark-making opportunities, daily ‘dough disco’ sessions, and various malleable messy play materials, with resources adapted to each child’s developmental stage to ensure continuous progression.
READ AND RECALL
Children are introduced to books from infancy to pre-school, progressing from black and white picture cards to longer stories, with monthly ‘Brilliant Books’ activities designed to enhance story recall through engaging activities and discussions, supported by practitioners using consistent language, visual aids, and verbal cues.
A THOUGHTFULLY CRAFTED CURRICULUM
Supporting every child’s individual development journey
A child’s development is a fascinating blend of physical, emotional, and mental growth. Our curriculum is thoughtfully designed to nurture each aspect of this. From the earliest stages, we provide an environment rich with opportunities for growth in all areas. Through play, exploration, and guided activities, children develop essential motor skills and physical coordination.
Equally important, our approach nurtures emotional intelligence, helping children understand and manage their feelings, build empathy, and develop strong social bonds. The result is a nurturing and supportive setting where children can explore, discover, and thrive, laying a strong foundation for future growth and success as well-rounded individuals.
